Perinatology Services
Perinatology at CJW MedicalPerinatology is a subspecialty of obstetrics and gynecology. In our Perinatal Centers, perinatologists assist obstetricians, midwives and other health care providers in delivering individualized care for pregnant women at risk for adverse maternal, fetal or neonatal outcomes. Risk factors include a history of recurrent pregnancy loss, history of premature labor and/or birth and history of an underweight baby. Other risk factors include: A multiple pregnancy and chronic medical illnesses such as hypertension or insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, renal disease, systemic lupus, or Rh disease.
4D Ultrasound Gives a Detailed Look at Your Baby in UteroA powerful new ultrasound tool is giving expectant parents and physicians a way to better assess the health of their baby in the womb. Called 4D ultrasound, the device gives perinatologists a better view of possible abnormalities such as skeletal defects, cleft lip palates, hernias and other conditions. 4D Ultrasound adds the element of time to 3D images of the baby, resulting in live action images of a baby's internal anatomy moving in real time. The new tool allows physicians to detect or rule out any number of issues, from vascular abnormalities to genetic syndromes. Who Benefits Who Benefits from Prenatal Diagnosis? Pre-conceptual Counseling & Patient EducationDuring Pre conceptual Counseling, the perinatologist evaluates and provides advice to women who want to have a baby but may be at risk for complications. This group includes women who have an underlying medical illness such as diabetes or hypertension, women with past pregnancy complications, or those who are at risk for adverse genetic outcome. The perinatologist provides all pertinent information needed to assist couples in making informed decisions, and then provides guidance and support for the chosen course of action. Our Diabetes Care Center lends support to the perinatology program by providing education about diabetes related complications. In addition to leading maternal-fetal medicine specialists, staff members include a nurse educator, genetic counselor, and ultrasound technologists certified by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers. |
